The third independent living unit at Abbeyfield Timboon is now complete and will be occupied within days.
Abbeyfield Timboon Committee chairman Peter Pope said the milestone came less than a year after the second unit was completed. He said attention had already turned to unit four.
“As a community, we set out to provide six independent living units and redevelop the original building here in Baxter Street and we’re well and truly on track,” he said.
“Each milestone is something that our community can be very proud of. We wouldn’t be in this position without all the local fundraising and the support of Abbeyfield Mortlake.”
The Timboon site is owned and operated by The Abbeyfield Society (Mortlake) Inc, however chief executive officer Deb Rantall said construction of the Timboon units was almost entirely funded by community fundraising and local donations.
“One-hundred per cent of the money raised for Timboon, stays in Timboon to continue what is a wonderful local success story,” she said.
“The board of Abbeyfield Mortlake is really buoyed by the level of interest in the units and the progress that is being made to help local people stay in their own community.
“We’re already talking to potential residents for the fourth unit and we haven’t even started building it yet, so all the signs are really good for the ongoing success of the project.”
Mr Popes thanked his other Abbeyfield Timboon Committee members and the wider community for ensuring the town’s vision for local aged care became a reality.
“We have an incredibly generous community who worked tirelessly to help raise the money we needed to get this project underway,” Mr Pope said.
“Fortunately, now with a couple of units occupied we have some revenue coming in to continue our progress and take some of the pressure off the fundraising efforts.
“We still run some really important fundraisers and we’re incredibly well supported by local tradespeople and businesses to make sure those events are always successful.”
Mr Pope urged community members to attend Abbeyfield Timboon’s annual general meeting on Tuesday, September 13 at 1.30pm in the meeting room at 20 Baxter Street.
The annual general meeting for Abbeyfield Mortlake will be held on Monday, October 24 at 2pm in the meeting room at 30 Shaw Street, Mortlake.
