New Director of Care and Operations at Aberlea in Mortlake, Leonie Kelly, with resident Elsie Moutafis.

A personal experience caring for her nan guided registered nurse Leonie Kelly towards a career now focused on helping elderly members of the community.

Ms Kelly has just been announced as the new Director of Care and Operations at Aberlea in Mortlake.

She said she was excited by the challenge and helping Aberlea continue to provide first class aged care for residents and their families.

Ms Kelly said she began studying nursing when she was 30, once her children were school-age.

“While working as a graduate nurse I worked across all aspects of nursing and once I completed my graduate year I worked in general and unit areas,” she said.

“My nan became ill and I took time off to care for her at home until she died in her home. This experience steered me to completing a course in palliative care and becoming a specialised palliative care nurse.

“I worked as a specialised palliative care nurse for five years on the ward at South West Healthcare and in the community of Warrnambool and surrounding areas.”

Ms Kelly said she left nursing for a while to teach enrolled nurses at South West TAFE in Warrnambool, before an opportunity presented itself at Opal, Riverside Warrnambool.

“My new role here at Aberlea in Mortlake oversees the care of all the residents to make sure we meet all their requirements,” she said.

“The Director of Care and Operations role is all about the residents – what we need to do for them and how we can best support them and their families.

“It’s also about supporting the team here at Aberlea. My first impressions are that everyone is very friendly, very approachable and it’s a nice little community.”
